Luna started her new life with a family & male karst shepherd puppy on a ranch near by. All the best, our sweet little 'Moon'!

Lina is said to be leaving this weekend. Stressfull days for us, I must admit.

Jena is the most amazing, playful mommy ever! She really enjoys playing with her girls and no wonder Lina & Luna totally adore her. She also teaches them how to be a good 'karst shepherd': how to bark on visitors, hide a delicious bone or play a tug game with such a passion that their pack leader is astonished. Jena also shows them how to enjoy in a car ride and be best friends with veterinrary. Happy days!

Lan, Lena & Luks already left our litter and are reported to feel great with treir new families.
Lan went to Ljubljana where he shares bed with loving couple, Lena is near by in Motnik with a family with 4 children, and Luks drove all the way to Pivka to meet 3 little boys and several goats.

Although we are a bit sad, we know we found great new owners and pictures we get from them confirm good choice.

To keep sweet memories forever, our little neighbours sketched this amazing pictures. Nežka & Janja, thank you!

Seven weeks and a half: time to leave home and be naughty somewhere else ;)

Our strong, brave boy Lan found new owners today. With a great couple, who's been in love with Karst Shepherds for several years, he moved to Ljubljana. Holding documents, dog food and nappy scented by the litter, new 'pack' said good-bye to breeder in tears. At that moment I was more certain than ever: money doesn't make you happy. Dog does.

Just before he left, I took my 6 puppies + Jena + toddler for a long walk and we had a lecture with a bone. New owners are recommended to repeat it every now and then. See the video.

7 weeks! Puppies went for a trip today. They were taken to the veterinary and they were very brave, as in the car, as well as in the funny institution with big needles. I had a bit less courage when I had to enter PIN to pay the bill, veterinary expenses were enormous. But for dogs, of course, only the best, that's why they eat high quality dry dog food and are given extra raw meat of best quality as well. However, I believe the best investment into them is my time: I spend as much time as possible with them (and no longer count my day off-s). Our puppies grow and live with the family, they're taken for a walk each day, they get to meet different people - from babies to seniors, hear different sounds (vacuum cleaner, tractor etc), they observe different movements - from bikers to strollers. One by one are taken out of litter to spend time with me and try first obedience tricks. I check their teeth, peek into ears, I brush and cuddle them. I distrurb them during feeding, bring & take away their toys, do funny things with them and end up smiling in tears. Real tears are about to come by the end of the week, when first puppies are about to leave us. Luckily we found great families with children and lots of love. For two perspective girls we are still looking for new owners. Interested? More info at jana.lorbek@gmail.com

New owners, are you ready for sweet little naughty buddies?

Have you ever seen puppies driving a car and using telephone? Here is a video you just have to see!

Puppies are turning 7 weeks on Tuesday. The best time to visit veterinary for vacination, getting chip + passport and donating blood for DNK analysis. Health is not a coincidence: DLVKOS and their partner Biotechnical Faculty work really hard to keep karst shepherds healthy.

Breedeng clerk, who brought us pedigree numbers yesterday, was amazed by puppies beauty. No wonder we are all totally in love with them!

Lana made a day for toddlers in a local kindergarten. She enjoyed their company a lot, but was kind of tired later (I agree, children may exhaust you;)), as she fell asleep as soon as we got home.

Puppies are developing rapidy and as a good breeder I do my best for their early learning and socialization. They were already brushed, distrurbed while eating meat - noone didn't mind, so my hand is still in one piece, taken out to several places, and they meet strangers almost daily. In 3 weeks, they are ready to go into new homes! 2 girls and 2 boys still available.

Puppies got their very first collars today. They didn't mind at all, they were too busy with nagging their siblings. Watch the video here. Eventhough they're sooooo big, they still love to cuddle with their mom.

How to weigh a puppy? Hard job! Kitchen scale said 'Error!' when Jena's little karst shepherds steped up. In 3 weeks, when they are about to leave us, they'll have around 7 kg. In a year, our girls will have around 30 kg (25-37 required by the standard) and boys app. 10 more (30-42 kg, source: www.dlvkos.si).

Two loving families visited us this weekend to 'book' their puppy. But even though the contract has been signed and puppies already eat solid food, it is very important for them to stay with their mother for next couple of weeks to socialize. One thing is for sure: they will love kids! Not only our little toddler, also friend's children come and cuddle them. And me & my husband can't take eyes off them. No wonder they grow so fast, love is the best 'food' ;)

Happy Birthday, dear puppies! 4 weeks. Allready a bit naughty, enjoying their first solid food and first sun. As a birthday present, they were taken outside for the first time. They were so astonished that they fell asleep ;)

As an editor of Slovenian's most famous magazine for dogs Kužek (Puppy) it is my pleasure to write an editorial and add my photo. How convenient it is to have dog models at home! They are just too big to all fit into my basket, so only 3 are represented. Have you picked your own one yet?

Don't miss fresh photos, already available hereNew photos of the brand new Nikon will be our 'dad' posted weekly. And when the puppies go to their new homes (first prospective owners have already visited us), we keep our fingers crossed that we get a link to the new photo gallery, right?

And dear followers: Happy Easter!

Saturday, March 23, 2013

Our sweet puppies gained another couple of 10 grams today, as appropriate for age 10 days, isn't it? Breeding clerk, who visited us this afternoon, was amazed by their beauty and strength. I must admit, my husband and I are not surprised by their weigth, as we see their mummy how well she takes care of them - see the video, how fast they crawl to her, but are more impressed by their eyes: just yesterday they peeked into the light for the first time. Oh, and they got a new bed and they don't mind sharing it with a toddler. How nice!

Puppies expected in a week! Our precious mommy-to-be now walks a bit slower, eats a bit more and seeks someone to pat her more often,  but otherwise she's just as happy and as naughty as she usually is ;) A week ago, she decided to teach our toddler to do her tricks. Here is a video.

Saturday, February 23, 2013

Jena, our beloved Karst Shepherd, has been our best friend for almost 2 years now. She makes a great family member, loyal partner and great play buddy to our toddler. She's friendly, patient and loving, smart and reliable, full of energy and excited to work with her pack, but also calm, although never lazy as it is often believed for sheep dogs. She is a brave guard dog who wouldn't let anyone sneek into our home, but would never do any harm to her family. She's not only the best in dog shows, with several medals and the Slovenian Junior Championship, but also best in obedience courses: she has B-BH and rally-obedience I certificate.

Jena really changed our life: she brought so much joy and happiness into our home that we thought it would be just too selfish to keep it secret. So we decided to spread love and make more families happy: we decided to have puppies!

We chose a wonderful father-to-be, who was born on the very same day as our girl, and who is extremely friendly and beautiful. His beauty was acknowledged on several dog shows and he was also on the front page of Slovenian most popular magazine for dogs - Kužek. Jena has it's own column in the same magazine. Not only friendly, but also famous puppies expected!

Karst Shepherd is a unique, highly prized and rare breed. It is the only officially recognized Slovenian autochthonous breed and amounts up to 700-800 representatives. Small number, big love! This love is quite old, more than 500 years, and was firstly mentioned as Illyrian Shepherd.

Karst Shepherd is medium sized, harmonious dog with a strong constitution. Male height, defined by Standard, is 57-63 cm (22-25 inches), weight 26-40 kg (58-88 pounds); females are slightly smaller. Rich iron-grey coat is straight, at least 10 cm long and double. The head is noble, with friendly eyes and hanging ears. Strong teeth make scissor-bite.

Strong teeth, strong character, indeed. Breed is often described as brave,  independent and incorruptible. It is an excellent watchdog, amazing sheepdog, but also makes the best family member. It is friendly, calm, tolerant, loves children and highly attached to its pack. Karst Shepherds are nowadays seen in big cities as well as on pastures, in obedience competitions and modern sports, such as rally-obedience, agillity etc.

Kast Shepherd is easy to maintain: it requires just some basic care, such as weekly brushing and perhaps bathing once a year. More attention should be paid to socialization and schooling, which shall be consistent and based on positive motivation. Well socialized shepherd will make an excellent partner in urban environment and will live happily even in a small apartment, as well as outdoors.

Proper nutrition and exercise will keep your dog healthy up to 15 years. As a rare breed it is very healthy, with rare diseases or congenital anomalies. Society of lover and breeders of Karst Shepherd's Slovenia (DLVKOS) pays a great attention to genetic researches and collaborates with Biotechnical Faculty of Ljubljana; DLVKOS maintains a detailed register of it's representatives, including breeding combinations and health's issues bookmarks.
